Overview

Taipei European School welcomes applicants for the Head of PE position to commence in the British Primary Section of Taipei European School in August 2023. The British Primary Section is committed to the organisational vision, that all flourish!

Responsibilities

The role of all primary class and specialist teachers within TES is to deliver a quality teaching and learning experience to all students within the Section and report outcomes to wider members of the school community. The Head of PE will lead and manage the PE curriculum, within the school community, and encourage health and wellbeing throughout the primary school. The Head of PE will work closely with the Head of Sport to promote an inclusive ethos toward all health and sport related matters.

 

Main areas of responsibility and accountability: 

  • To be a positive role model within both the PE department and the whole school for both pupils and staff;
  • To oversee and develop in consultation with SLT appropriate pedagogy and methodology within the PE department;
  • To lead all department members in the formulation of aims, objectives and strategic plans for the department which have coherence and relevance to the needs of students and to the aims, objectives and strategic plans of the school;
  • To manage the monitoring and assessment of all aspects of work within the PE department and to contribute within the framework of the school’s assessment processes;
  • To formally observe all members of the department teaching on at least 3 occasions each school year and to provide constructive feedback;
  • To ensure that there is a positive climate for learning within the PE department;
  • To be responsible in ensuring that there are high expectations of teaching and learning throughout the department;
  • To lead the PE department in actively using data and all other relevant information to monitor and follow-up student progress;
  • To effectively manage and deploy teaching/support staff, financial and physical resources within the department to support the teaching and learning within the department;
  • To be responsible for maintaining a safe learning environment in line with the requirements of Health and Safety and ensuring that all staff follow all relevant procedures.

 

Management of teaching and learning within the PE department

  • To lead the development of appropriate resources, schemes of work, assessment and teaching and learning strategies within the department;
  • To liaise with the SLT Curriculum Leader to ensure the delivery of an appropriate, comprehensive, high quality and cost-effective curriculum programme which supports the main foci within the whole school action plan;
  • To lead curriculum development within the whole department;
  • To keep up to date with local and national developments in the subject area and teaching practice and methodology;
  • To actively monitor and respond to curriculum developments and  initiatives within PE;
  • To establish common standards of practice within the department and develop the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles;
  • To ensure that all schemes of work and all teachers cater for the needs of all students, irrespective of ability;
  • To manage behaviour within the PE department through the use of positive behaviour strategies;
  • To lead the departmental system for the tracking of student progress, the setting of student targets and to work towards their achievement;
  • To ensure that all reports within the department are completed by the times stated and to a professional standard;
  • To organise and manage EPC Sports Days;
  • To liaise with the Education Services team and relevant external bodies to provide opportunities for a range of sporting experiences for our children;
  • To liaise with the Fobisia Manager to facilitate the participation in Fobisia Games. 

 

Management of staff within the PE department

  • To work with SLT Curriculum Leader to ensure that staff development needs are identified and that appropriate programmes are designed to meet their needs;
  • To line manage PE staff through the performance development process ensuring that challenging objectives are set which reflect both individual need and that of the school;
  • To make appropriate work arrangements for classes when staff are absent, ensuring appropriate work within the department liaising with the cover teacher or cover supervisor;
  • To participate in the selection process for new staff within the PE department;
  • To ensure an effective induction into the department and the school for new staff;
  • To be responsible for the day to day management of staff within the PE department and to act as a positive role model;
  • To promote teamwork and to motivate staff to ensure an effective working relationship;

 

Resources

  • To manage the available resources of space, staff, money and equipment efficiently within the limits, guidelines and procedures laid down;
  • To ensure that risk assessments are organised where departmental activities necessitate such;
  • To be responsible that the whole department provides an environment that is conducive to good teaching and learning.

 

FOBISIA

  • To support the Head of Sport in leading the FOBISIA Primary Games Team: trials, training, trip and review;
  • Support the Head of Sport to organise and manage the logistics of the trip organisation, following the relevant TES policies.

 

Sport

  • To provide opportunities for children to participate in competitive sports opportunities;
  • To liaise the Head of Sport and Student Services to ensure a range of sporting opportunities are provided for students.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s or a higher degree from a recognised university.  A degree in PE/Sports is desirable. 
  • A valid government-issued teaching license to teach in the candidate’s country’s school system
  • Minimum five years’ teaching experience in a formal school setting environment  (Preferably)
  • Knowledge and understanding of PE teaching from Reception to Year 6
  • Experience of leading or assisting the leadership at departmental level
